Oradell Police Department Patch History

The seal of the Oradell Police Department is rooted in the heritage and founding identity of the Borough of Oradell, formally established in 1894. The patch incorporates elements derived from the borough’s official seal, which itself reflects the area’s deep historical ties to the indigenous people who first inhabited the region. At the center of the design is a symbolic representation of Chief Oratam, a respected leader of the Lenape (also known as the Hackensack people), whose presence and leadership shaped the early history of the Pascack Valley.

Chief Oratam is widely recognized for his role as a diplomat and peacemaker during the early period of European settlement in northern New Jersey. His leadership emphasized cooperation, coexistence, mutual respect, and principles that remain foundational to modern policing. By placing his likeness at the center of the patch, the department acknowledges not only the original stewards of this land but also the enduring values of fairness, protection, and service to community.

The imagery surrounding Chief Oratam — often including figures representing community, unity, and protection — reinforces the department’s mission: to serve all residents with integrity while honoring the past. The radiating star design reflects the traditional police badge, symbolizing authority and vigilance, while the inner seal connects the department directly to Oradell’s origins. By incorporating the borough’s name, “Ora” pays tribute to Chief Oratam, while “Dell” honors the borough’s former name, Delford.

Chief Oratam’s importance to the core of the department is both symbolic and aspirational. He represents leadership grounded in wisdom, respect for others, and a commitment to peace — qualities that align with the professional standards and ethical responsibilities of law enforcement today. His presence on the patch serves as a constant reminder that policing is not only about enforcement, but also about stewardship, trust, and community partnership.

Respectfully,
