Firearms Application Process

 

Oradell Police Department

Firearms Investigation Unit

 

 

The following is the procedures to follow if you apply for a Firearms Identification Card (F.I.D Card).

 

If you have never applied for a FID card in the Borough of Oradell or any other NJ jurisdiction then you will need to do the following:

 

  1. Fill out an Application for Firearm Purchaser Identification card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Make sure the form is complete.  Double check the names and addresses of your 2 references.  Also sign the form.  You can also come to the Oradell PD to pick one up.  You must be 18 to apply.
  2. Fill out a Consent for Mental Health Records Search.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Do not sign this form until you come to the OPD, it must be signed in the presence of a police officer.  You can also come to the OPD to pick one up.
  3. Once the above 2 forms are filled out you can come to the OPD and submit them.  Please bring your N.J Driver’s License or some other form of government issued I.D.
  4. Once you submit the above forms at the police department you will be given a New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form.  You will then make an appointment with IdentoGo to be fingerprinted.  The directions to do this are on the form. 
  5. Processing usually takes 4-8 weeks.  Generally the thing that holds up the processing is references not returning the reference letter in a timely fashion.  Make sure you tell your references the letter is coming and to return it ASAP. 
  6. Once we complete your background investigation and processing you will be notified to come pick your card up.  The cost of the card is $5, please bring cash, no checks or credit cards.

 

The following is the procedure to follow if you would like a Pistol Purchase Permit:

 

  1. You must have a FID Card to obtain a PP permit.
  2. If you are applying for a FID card at the same time you would like a PP permit then all you need to do is check the appropriate box on the Application for Firearms Purchaser I.D. and/or Handgun Purchase Permit form.  You must be 21 to purchase a handgun in NJ
  3. If you already have a F.I.D card then you must do the following:

a.       Fill out an Application for Firearm Purchaser Identification card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Make sure the form is complete.  Double check the names and addresses of your 2 references.  Also sign the form. You can also come to the OPD to pick one up.

b.      Fill out a Consent for Mental Health Records Search.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Do not sign this form until you come to the OPD, it must be signed in the presence of a police officer.  You can also come to the OPD to pick one up.

c.       Once the above 2 forms are filled out you can come to the OPD and submit them.  Please bring your F.I.D. Card and your NJ Driver’s License or some other form of government issued I.D.

d.      Once you submit the above 2 forms you will be given directions on how to have your computerized criminal history (CCH) completed.  We will give you a form that explains how to do this. This is done on-line now, no more yellow forms.

e.       Processing usually takes 4-8 weeks.  Generally the thing that holds up the processing is references not returning the reference letter in a timely fashion.  Make sure you tell your references the letter is coming and to return it. 

f.       Once we complete your background investigation and processing you will be notified to come pick your card up.  The cost of each permit is $2, please bring cash, no checks or credit cards.

 

The following is the procedure to follow for a change of address or if your F.I.D. Card is lost or Stolen:

 

1.      Fill out an Application for Firearm Purchaser Identification card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Make sure the form is complete.  Double check the names and addresses of your 2 references.  Also sign the form.  You can also come to the Oradell PD to pick one up.  You must be 18 to apply.

2.      Fill out a Consent for Mental Health Records Search.  This form is located here.  This link is a PDF file and you can just fill in the required info and print it out.  Do not sign this form until you come to the OPD, it must be signed in the presence of a police officer.  You can also come to the OPD to pick one up.

3.      Once the above 2 forms are filled out you can come to the OPD and submit them.  Please bring your N.J Driver’s License or some other form of government issued I.D.  Also if you have your S.B.I # please bring it.

4.      Once you submit the above 2 forms you will be given directions on how have your CCH completed.  The fee for this is $20 and is paid to the State Police not the OPD. We will give you a form that explains how to do this. This is done on-line now, no more yellow forms.

5.      Processing usually takes 4-8 weeks.  Generally the thing that holds up the processing is references not returning the reference letter in a timely fashion.  Make sure you tell your references the letter is coming and to return it ASAP. 

6.      Once we complete your background investigation and processing you will be notified to come pick your permit up.  The cost of each permit is $2, please bring cash, no checks or credit cards.  The permit is good for 90 days and may be renewed once for an additional 90 days.

The above procedures do not cover all situations.  Please call the OPD and ask for Officer Costa or Officer Peters if you have any questions.  They process all firearms applications and can answer your questions.  In addition, the NJ State Police Website has more information about owning firearms in NJ.
